Shear Madness it’s called and sheer madness it was. Towson University’s Campus Activities Board sponsored a student trip to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Feb. 26th to see Paul Pörtner’s Shear Madness.
“Shear Madness was brought to us by one of our programming chairs, Kathy Davis,” said Assistant Director of C.A.B. Thomas Moore. “She actually went to Shear Madness, the comedy show, awhile back…She thought it was a great thing to bring to the Towson students.”
The comedic off-Broadway play takes place in a hair salon, following six hysterical characters as they try to find out who committed a murder. The employees and customers of the salon are forced into questioning by two police officers who ask everyone to retrace their steps before the event took place. Alongside the characters, the audience is brought into the action, making accusations and providing additional information to the characters themselves.
I, for one, can agree that this show was absolutely hilarious from start to finish. Within the dialogue were various political cracks and pop culture references that left the audience gasping for air between the actors’ lines. Jokes ranged from John McCain’s age to Paris Hilton’s trashy behavior.
One particular joke that really had the audience falling out of their seats occurred during a conversation between one of the police officers, Mike (Joel David Santner), and a customer and possible suspect, Eddie (Aaron Shields).
“Anything you say can and will be held against you,” declared Mike.
After a brief pause, Eddie replied, “Boobies.”
The tense situation in the play was suddenly relieved with Eddie’s comedic line.
After seeing Shear Madness, I highly recommend the show to anyone who is searching for a good time and is ready to laugh. Tickets are available for shows and can be purchased by going to the Shear Madness website. You can also check out this article on the play.
